How to Grade Beer Cans

Grading beer cans is the most important aspect of the beer can hobby today. Advanced collectors are very particular about the conditon of the cans they add to their collection. The hobby is similar to collecting baseball cards, comic books, coins and other collectibles.
Pristine beer cans will always be the most valuable. The slightest flaws detract from the value of a beer can and the severity of the flaws dictates the value of any can. Off grade beer cans containing rust, scratches, dents, etc. are more common and less sought after by collectors. Old beer cans in mint condition are much scarcer and highly prized by advanced collectors.

There is a general beer can grading sytem used by all serious beer can collectors. It has been established over the past 30 years and is well known throughout the beer can collecting hobby. It is based on grading the cans on a scale of 1 to 5 with plus(+) and minus(-) values added for precision. A grade 1 can is clean while a grade 5 can is very rusty. Below is the grading scale and how it corresponds to the value of any old beer can.
